The concept of an orderly television season, where new shows premiere in September and failed shows are gradually replaced throughout the winter, has begun to break down in recent years. But traditionally, January has been the time when networks begin to try out replacement shows in earnest, in an attempt to salvage weak spots in their schedules. The success rate for January replacement series certainly isn't any better than for fall premieres -- after all, many of these series were deemed unsuitable for the fall schedule

Who would have thought stodgy CBS would suddenly be the place to see the hottest guys on television? The network known for procedural dramas --- where CSI rules three primetime hours a week -- stayed the course with double crime dramas this past fall: The Mentalist and Eleventh Hour. Rufus Sewell dropped his English burr and Simon Baker kicked his Aussie talk, making the pair the latest in a long line of non-native actors -- including House man Hugh Laurie and Life guy Damian Lewis -- storming the shores.

After a failed return to sitcom-land, Kelsey Grammer has signed on for a new ABC pilot. The erstwhile Frasier will team up with writer Tucker Crawley, whose credits include Everybody Loves Raymond and the new Amy Poehler project on NBC. Grammer will reportedly star as a corporate tycoon who gets demoted from his powerful job and must readjust to being a family man. It's a story audiences should be able to relate to, given the current economy -- if the show ever makes it to air.

You know a season premiere has done its job when you have to watch the damn preview screener three times to fully absorb it. I did this with the kickoff of Season 2 of Damages (which returns to FX Wednesday at 10 p.m.) and I am thrilled to report it was worth every manipulative, brain-bending moment. On the surface the FX drama is a "legal thriller," but that generic description does the show a grave injustice. The second season, like the first, is a textured, complex and nearly genre-redefining example of storytelling at

After months of will-she-or-won't-she rumors and speculation, it looks like Tori Spelling may finally be returning to her old zip code: 90210. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Spelling is in final negotiations to reprise her role as Donna Martin on The CW's remake of dad Aaron Spelling's beloved series, Beverly Hills, 90210. Spelling had previously been on board to appear on the 90210 pilot alongside former co-stars Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty, but that fell through, reportedly because she was getting paid less

While other celebrities were busily getting engaged over the holidays, Jennifer Love Hewitt and her fiance have called it quits. The Ghost Whisperer star was engaged to actor Ross McCall in November 2007 after dating for about two years. In 2008, she publicly praised him for being supportive and loving after unflattering bikini shots of Hewitt turned up online. Hewitt appeared on the cover of Us Magazine in October flaunting a slimmer frame, which she credited to working out in order to get in shape for her wedding.
